Quite a few years ago, one of our sales reps met a builder who was wrestling with the selections for a new apartment building in Sydney. The designer had specified encaustic cement tiles for bathroom feature walls.

The builder was trying to find an alternative – as beautiful as the tiles were, they were so thick and heavy that the walls would need to be reinforced. The porous cement would also need regular sealing. He asked us to develop a ceramic tile version – we said yes and our Artisan range was born.

To be honest, this request came at the pointy end of a trend-tsunami that wasn’t on our radar at all - and to start using ornate, traditional patterns on the floor and wall just felt a bit ‘wrong’ in the wake of minimalism.

But… it didn’t take long to acclimatise, and the more we looked into this new trend - the more we got it. It goes without saying that we quickly fell in love with this style. After many years and iterations, Artisan has become a signature range for us and has set a high benchmark for quality encaustic design in the tile world.
